The Eve of the Atom

I am not a man of eloquent words.
I do not claim to inspire other men to greatness.
I will not be sung at the tables of my progeny.
I stood upon my lofty perch, high in my ivory tower, above the petty fighting happening below.
And like so many others I stopped watched, my jaw agape, as God and the Devil set the sky on fire.
For an instant man stopped fighting serpent, and serpent stopped fighting man.
Both our Gods had forsaken us, and together we learned their wrath.
There was no rapture.
There was no salvation for the devout.
Like the sky before us, we burned with world.
We burned with the world by our own volition.
